Description

In Ashcroft Church, Ashcroft Road, Cirencester ONLY!

PLEASE NOTE, AT THE REQUEST OF THE SPEAKER THIS TALK WILL NOT BE STREAMED OR RECORDED

but you are welcome to join us in person at Ashcroft Church

Although the Cotswolds cannot be thought of as being an industrial area, two major industries, agriculture and quarrying, have been carried on for centuries.  Furthermore, a range of much smaller industries have also thrived at one time such as woollen cloth manufacturing, silk thread production and brewing, of which happily the last one continues today.

Good transport systems are vital to support all industrial activity and the remains of these systems are a very important part of of our industrial heritage. Accordingly, roads, canals and railways will also feature in this fully illustrated talk.

Joint with Cirencester Archaeological and Historical Society.

Dr. Ray Wilson is a retired physicist who spent much of his working life in the Electricity Supply Industry at Berkeley.

He was the Secretary of the Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology for many years. He is interested in all aspects of the County’s industrial past, especially turnpike roads, our local mills and Sharpness Docks.
